The rooftop was originally graced by a rooftop garden, stepping stones and a pool, all long since closed for reasons of health and safety, a phrase to chill the blood and deaden the soul. The elaborate butterfly-wing canopy was only to disguise the water tank and lift motor, "the first time that such arbitrary, purely decorative or purely expressionist motifs appeared in London".
