This new public house, opened in September 2017, is named after Arthur Batham as a tribute to his successful efforts in the 1950's to keep the family brewery in operation and in developing the well-known Batham's bitter. King Arthur of Round Table fame is a legendary figure and his historical existence is still a matter of controversy. There are no historical portraits of him so the sign designer has based the sign on a statue of King Alfred the Great at Winchester, Hants. He was King of Wessex and successfully defended his kingdom against Viking invaders. Image
