I spotted this building and it suggested Victorian Drill Hall to me. The arched opening with Pro Libertate Patrie and thistle emblem on the headstone, building to rear and accommodation block to left together with location next to links where the Nairn Volunteers trained but this I fear was wishful thinking. I have another explanation based on the OS Town Plans and 1869 name books as an elegant & commodious dwelling-house situated at the lower end of Cumming Street, Elderslie Place. It consists of three storeys, is finely slated, & in excellent condition, and is much frequented in the bathing season as a lodging house by visitors, for whose accommodation it was principally erected by the proprietor, Hugh Mann, who occupies part of it as a residence.
