The notice in the foreground records that this was the Greensward of Bettws, traditionally a meeting place for the Bards of Glamorgan. Bards were poets, musicians, teachers and storytellers dating back to the Middle Ages. The first Chair and gathering of Tir Iarll (Earl's Land) took place here. The Chair of Tir Iarll was established under the protection of Gilbert de Clare, Prince of Glamorgan, born September 2nd 1243.
