The memorial was moved to its present site in 1972 when Heigham Street was redeveloped. The aircraft, B-24 (H) 42-95133 from 753rd Sqdn. Horsham St. Faiths (458th Bomb Group) had been returning from a Practice Mission, making an instrument landing when it struck the spire of St Philips church and crashed.
