Metal plate attached to stone post by the A7, in parish of ARTHURET (CARLISLE District), Hopesike Woods, South of junction to Briscoe Hill, on grass verge, on East side of road. Longtown plate, erected by the Longtown, Snab & Haithwaite Bridge turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- CARLISLE 7 MILES {hand to right} LONGTOWN {hand to left} 1½ MILE Carved benchmark and rivet on top. Grade II Listed.
