The great hall on the north side of Seaton Delaval Hall measures 44 feet by 25 feet, paved with black and white marble and very high. The photograph is taken from the music gallery high up on the south side. The upper alcoves are occupied by large composite figures made between 1720-1750 representing the Classical Greek muses: music, painting, sculpture,architecture, geography and astronomy. They are made of plaster, on a wrought iron frame. A visitor in 1778 commented that 'they were as large as the life, admirably executed by the best Italian artists'. They were badly damaged in the 1820 fire, and subsequent weathering before the building was re-roofed.
