East Carlton Farm near Aldbrough was rebuilt in the late 18th or early 19th century and has a walled garden which was built for an earlier house. A manor has existed at Carlton since the Norman Conquest, recorded in 1066 as belonging to Sven and in 1086 to Drew de Bevrère. The name Carlton is thought to be an Anglo-Scandinavian hybrid meaning 'peasants' farms'.
