The carriage is a 'Motor Brake Second Open' (MBSO), built in the early 70s for use on direct Waterloo to Portsmouth services, running in 4 car sets. All of this type were withdrawn from main-line use by 2004/2005 in line with the withdrawal of 'slam-door' stock from the national network. 2 units were, however, retained for use on the Lymington Branch (see Image), running in 3 car formations. These were finally withdrawn in 2010 but the units have been preserved.
