The Prince of Waterloo is, according to the pub website, a noble rank created by King William I of the Netherlands; he made it in honour and recognition of the famous victory by the Duke of Wellington in 1815. The pub itself is documented as the Prince of Waterloo in 1816. However, the building dates back to the sixteenth century, although it's not clear whether it was a licensed premises then. The site also notes other local information: there is a row of cottages known as 'The Barracks'; also just down the lane is Powdermill Farm - where gunpowder for the Napoleonic wars was once made.
