The plague struck the village of Eyam in 1665 (brought from London in some damp cloth). The village cut itself off to prevent it spreading, but even so 260 out of the village population of 350 died. George Viccars, the first victim, died here at Plague Cottage on 7th September 1665. The cottage was the scene of just one of many tragedies, the details of which can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5598275
