For some reason these few houses, opposite the rugby league ground, were missed when the dozen or so streets and hundreds of houses to the north of Wheldon Road were cleared in the 1950s and 60s. They had been built in the 1860s and 70s when Wheldale Colliery was opened and formed almost a self-contained village for the miners who flocked in from all over the country. The area soon earned a deservedly rough reputation, something it maintained to the very end!
