The view from the Circular Road. “Clonavar” (different spelling) was the residence of James Girdwood, a Victorian businessman in the textile and furnishing trade. At the time Sydenham and the surrounding area was, possibly, the most fashionable part of Belfast and contained many “big houses” in extensive grounds. A few remain in non-residential use but most have long-since been sold for redevelopment.
