An information board says proudly that this is the final one of seven pumping stations built by Lothian Regional Council to ensure that all Edinburgh's sewage is properly treated instead of being discharged into the sea. Given its prominent position on the sea front, LRC is to be commended for making the building more interesting than a plain concrete box. LRC was, of course, one of the short-lived regional councils established in 1975 and abolished again in 1995. Scottish Water is now responsible for waste water and sewage treatment and disposal.
