St Mary's Street and St Martin's Street run parallel from north to south through the town centre, occasionally separated by buildings and occasionally by open spaces: this little square marks their meeting at the southern end of the town centre. It seems clear that the surviving Market Place, halfway along the twin streets, was once a much longer north-south marketplace stretching all the way to this point; a marketplace which has been turned into two parallel streets by permanent buildings replacing market stalls and encroaching on the open space, a common scenario.
