The hamlet is called North Rayne but the Aberdeenshire council sign reverses the words to 'Rayne North' School. An absolutely typical granite rural Aberdeenshire school set up after the 1872 Act made education for children aged 5-13 compulsory. The current (2016-17) school roll is a healthy 70 pupils, taught in three composite classes.
