Kettlestoun Mains was once a sand and gravel quarry with extraction of sand and gravel taking place between 1992 and 2000. It provided many tonnes of valuable building material for local construction projects. Extraction ceased in 2000 and the site has been carefully restored to create a habitat for wildlife and for people. The 38 hectare site now contains a number of different habitats including woodland, wetland and grassland, all of which support a rich variety of birds, plants, animals and insects.
