Burleigh Castle, Milnathort

The tower house is the oldest part of Burleigh Castle which was built in the late 15th or early 16th century. In 1582, the castle was transformed by Sir James Balfour. His wealth built the ornamental tower on the left. James Balfour became a favourite of Mary Queen of Scots, yet helped plot the murder of her husband Lord Darnley, and ultimately betrayed her military secrets. Despite spells in prison, in exile and as a galley slave, Sir James defied his many enemies and lived into old age.
