This structure dates from 1846 and stands on a low mound, which appears to be the remains of a motte. The top of the tower affords a fine view over the bay and was used as a lookout in the days of sail, particularly when the herring fleets filled the bay. A tiny room in the base of the tower was apparently used as a lock up for drunks and miscreants.
