People who like enormous Victorian churches will find St Matthew's just their kind of thing. "1891-4 by Matthew Holding. Big and prosperous, brown [iron]stone, cut into small regular blocks. Asymmetrically placed NW tower with a [lime]stone spire 170ft high. Transepts, flèche, polygonal apse. Tall proportions, lancet windows with plate tracery" (Nikolaus Pevsner). The church contains Henry Moore's "Northampton Madonna" and a crucifixion painted by Graham Sutherland.
