This row, and the nearby row in Dale Street, are known as 'Clinker Valley' locally. Beyond the last houses at each end of this row was a railway line and the main Warrington Road, which runs to the left of the overhanging trees, rises to cross the southernmost line by a bridge, while the northernmost line was elevated on an embankment overshadowing the terrace. It would have been a place which felt cut off from the rest of the community.
