Education began at Newton Rigg with the establishment of the Cumberland & Westmorland Farm School in 1896. The building seen here on the left is evidently the original farmhouse, which appears in a historic photo of the first staff and students at the school - see the Westmorland Gazette 26.04.2012 http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/nostalgia/9673489.Bid_to_bring_back_Newton_Rigg_College_society/ .
