Members of this genus include several salt-tolerant plants of the amaranth family and are found in temperate regions around the world; 8 or 9 species are known to exist in Britain. Goosefoot plants frequently have an unpleasant smell and a number of species have leaves resembling the foot of a goose - hence their common name.
