Built probably as part of the unemployment relief schemes of the 1930s as an improvement to the main Derby – Nottingham A52, now the A6005. The former canal towpath has been developed as a walking route between Derby and Sandiacre. The footpath has clearly been re-aligned slightly since Peter Shone's 2005 view http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/66119
