So named because Charles I held negotiations there with Parliamentary forces during the Civil War in early 1645 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_and_Treaty . The building dates from 1576 and is Grade II* listed https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1080148 although "much restored".
