It is a pretty hard and fast rule in politics. Never cut and run, calling an unnecessary election. However every now and then someone thinks that they can buck the trend. Given the quality or lack of it of the current opposition, the temptation proved too much and Theresa May went for it, only to lose her parliamentary majority after the most incompetent campaign imaginable. It was an open goal, there was no opposition worthy of the term. I have to be honest - I am getting rather fed up with visiting this place for no good reason, three times in a year now with a scheduled council election in between a pair of catastrophic blunders by the Conservative and Unionist Party.
