The memorial is to the officers and men of 24 Air-Sea Rescue Unit, Royal Air Force who were billeted at the Cliff Hotel 1941 to 1945. The primary two operational HSLs were the 63ft. BPB type 3 'Whaleback' No. 2551 and the 68ft. BPB 'Hants and Dorset' No. 2697.
