The inscription dates from 1758 and is an odd mixture of English and Latin. It would have been moved from the building that was a precursor to this one. It reads as follows: The Rev Mr John Scargill hujus Aedis Rector Built and endowed this School Cum Fundi Censu Et obiit Januarii Die 17. Anno a Christi ortu 1662 Mr Tho. Hague, Willm Coke, Thos Scattergood and Zachary Warhey Trustees Erected this Stone Anno Erae Xnae MDCCLVIII Frans Greay Mr. Ens Entium miserere mei. The Latin elements translate as follows: "hujus Aedis Rector":"Rector of this house" "Cum Fundi Censu Et obiit Januarii Die 17. Anno a Christi ortu 1662":"from his own property and he died 17 January in the year 1662 from the birth of Christ" "Anno Erae Xnae MDCCLVIII":" In the year of the Christian era 1758" "Frans Greay M[agiste]r.
