The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is a native species in south west Ireland and planted fairly widely elsewhere in the British Isles. Once the flowers have been fertilised it takes a year for the fruit to develop, so both appear on the tree at the same time. The ripe fruit are edible, but not at all special. Oaklands Park is the home of the Pestalozzi International Village.
