In the 1890s, Earsham Street House (on the right http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1602663 ) was the residence of Frederick Smith, a wealthy solicitor and Town Reeve. When his wife became ill, the clatter of horses and carts on the cobbles below her bedroom disturbed her sleep. So Smith had the alley re-paved with cork bricks to muffle the noise and the thoroughfare acquired its unusual name.
