These attractive butterflies can be found from April to November throughout England and Wales and in many parts of Scotland. The underside of their wings is a dull brown colour with a small white 'C' shaped marking which gives the butterfly its name. Only about 100 years ago the species was almost extinct - between 1830 and 1920 only the odd specimen was recorded. After 1930 its numbers started to increase and presently the Comma is a familiar sight in woodlands and gardens.
