In 1928 Velvet House was a vacant warehouse opposite the main entrance to UMIST. The building was rented by the University and adapted to provide a home for departments including Municipal Engineering and Building. http://www.mace.manchester.ac.uk/project/teaching/civil/historic_construction/maps/umist.php Originally it was one of a number of packing warehouses built in the 1900s http://www.revealinghistories.org.uk/why-was-cotton-so-important-in-north-west-england/places/manchester-warehouses.html Now it has been converted into offices and apartments.
