An LSWR class M7 tank locomotive (furthest from camera) manoeuvres a mixed rake of vehicles in front of Eastleigh locomotive works. Nearest the camera is a rebuilt (from 'air-smoothed casing' design) Merchant Navy class No. 35019 'French Line CGT'. Built in 1945, it was rebuilt in 1959 and withdrawn in 1965. It was scrapped in South Wales in 1966. Close inspection of the photograph reveals that the locomotive is without coupling rods between the main driving wheels. Next to the Merchant Navy is an unidentified ex-LB&SCR E4 class. Several of this class found their way from the Brighton Line into South Western territory after nationalisation.
