There is nowhere else quite like Rye. In the words of Pevsner: "Hill towns are rare in England. In Sussex Lewes is one, Winchelsea another, but Rye, its sandstone rock rising out of the total flat of the fen, makes its statement yet more unmistakably. The houses building up to the low tower of the church are reminiscent of the north of France." Probably the most famous street in Rye is Mermaid Street and Hartshorn House is towards the lower end. Over the door is a sign which says "The Old Hospital 15th century". On one of the gables is a date of 1576.
