Sainfoin is a member of the pea family and originates from Turkey, Iran and Europe but is now widespread in warm-temperate Europe (as far as Sweden), Asia, Mediterranean countries and western North America. It was first cultivated in northern France and in the UK where it is grown for pasture, hay or silage since it is very palatable to livestock. Sainfoin can be seen mainly in the south of England and in Wales and is quite rare elsewhere.
