Altab Ali Park, Whitechapel

The park is on the site of the old white church of St Mary Matfelon, from which Whitechapel gets its name. The park was renamed after Altab Ali, a Bangladeshi textile worker who was murdered by three teenagers on 4 May 1978 in a racist attack as he walked home after work. A feature of the park is a replica of the Shaheed Minar martyrs monument (the original is in Dhaka, Bangladesh) and commemorates those killed during the Bengali Language Movement demonstrations in 1952.
