This tower originally belonged to a chapel believed to have been built in the 13th century. The chapel itself was demolished in 1836 to ease congestion and there were proposals to also demolish the tower in 1897 but this plan was rejected in a ballot of townspeople. The tower now functions purely as a clock tower with bells dating from 1772.
