View NW on this famous ex-NER 'racing ground' north of York. The unrecognisable site of Alne station was just behind the camera, but it had been closed to passengers on 5/5/58 and lost its goods traffic since 10/8/64. Until closed from 30/12/57 the curious little independent Easingwold Railway branched off here to the right to Easingwold, with a passenger service until 29/11/48. This stretch of the ECML had been electrified for about a year, but the poles and wires seem barely able to withstand the winds that sweep across here - and quite often don't.
