Sudbrook Paper Mill

Sudbrook paper mill was opened in 1958 by Wiggins-Teape. The site was selected because of the large amount of water available from the nearby Severn tunnel pumping station. Latterly the mill produced around 150,000 tonnes annually of a speciality form of cardboard casing made from recycled paper and wood pulp. The mill closed in May 2006, after rises in energy costs made the plant uneconomic. At least 135 people were employed when it closed, with 250 at its peak in the 1970s and 80s. In 2016 the development of 212 new homes on the site has been approved by Monmouthshire councillors after years of failed applications.
