Former Brookhouse Colliery Site, Beighton

Until 1985 this was the site of Brookhouse Colliery, infamous for the 'overwind' accident in 1958 when a cage lowering men into the mine went out of control, seriously injuring 36. After closure, the site was used for opencast mining, which yielded 1.5 million tonnes of coal before that activity ceased in 1994. The area has since been landscaped.
