The motto 'pannus mihi panis' is generally translated as 'wool is my bread'. Symbols on the shield (balehooks and teasels) depict tools of the wool trade, which was once an important source of wealth in the town. The shield is mounted on a cow hide, representing another local industry of tanning and leatherwork. The shield is first recorded on a map produced by John Speed in 1611 http://www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/thelakes/html/speed/sp14fram.htm . It is not known when the motto was added. The town of Kendal has used this coat of arms for about four centuries, but it was only officially registered with the College of Heralds in 1993.
