Until 2001, a large proportion of Kirkconnell Flow was covered by trees, but Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) undertook a major project to restore the bog; about 62,000 trees were removed, and the bog is now in much better condition than previously. Kirkconnell Flow is the second largest raised bog in southern Scotland. It was designated as a National Nature Reserve in 1959. The Reserve and some adjacent fields were purchased by SNH from the previous owners in 1998.
