The statue, erected in 1878 in the city centre and later relocated to the outskirts, commemorates Leeds' answer to Dick Whittington. Starting as a tool maker's apprentice he rose to be come Lord Mayor in 1873-1875. It is listed grade 2 (list entry 1255598). There is also an elaborate memorial on his grave in Holbeck cemetery Image
