The north-south High Street lies transverse to the mediaeval main street of Steventon, along an old route from Oxford and the Midlands to the south coast. To judge from its buildings its importance in the village came in the mid-19th century when the railway station was opened at its south end. This was further reinforced in 1922 by the designation of the road as A34, the Winchester-Oxford trunk road, eventually bypassed along with Abingdon and Drayton in the 1970s.
