Despite the "RAILWAY STATION" sign above the arches of the porte cochere, this building no longer provides access to trains; it now leads to a shopping centre and supermarket. The station platform (a simple peninsula platform) is accessed through a gate to the left; on the extreme left in this picture, the end of one of Northern Rail's infamous class 142 diesel units can be glimpsed, forming a service to Darlington via Middlesbrough.
