These Tyneside flats that were built to withstand World War Two air raids. Completed at a time when the Blitz was beginning in London and the UK’s industrial areas were set to become targets of Hitler’s bombing raids. Positioned prominently on top of a hill in Tynemouth, the flats were probably the first ever to be built with special features to help tenants withstand air raids. Believed to be a prime target for Nazi bombers, they were constructed with fire resistant materials throughout and huge cellars to double as air raid shelters.
