The Archive Centre opened to the public in 2011, replacing the outgrown records office at Carlisle Castle (photo http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3043046 ). Over 1 million documents are stored here, dating back to the 12th century. In the concrete vaults, control of temperature and humidity helps to preserve the historic materials. There is also a conservation laboratory. Cumbria County Council operates three other Archive Centres, in Barrow, Kendal and Whitehaven.
