Dedicated to Edward the Confessor who died childless in 1066, thus sparking off the events that have made this year the most recognisable in English History. The Romanesque church, however, is far more recent. Built between 1845 and 1867 to serve the religious needs of Irish workers who came over to work in a flax mill owned by the Grimston Brothers.
