The gatehouse of the former Wetheral Priory, a house of the Benedictine order founded in 1106 by its motherhouse, St Mary's Abbey, York. The gatehouse was originally part of a series of buildings including a chapel and monastic school. In its present form the gatehouse dates from the 14th century and incorporates two storeys of domestic chambers, perhaps to accommodate priory officials, visitors or travellers. The priory was dissolved in 1538, thereafter falling into ruin. The gatehouse survived as a vicarage during the 16th and 17th centuries.
