In 2015 the original concrete plinth was replaced by a black polished granite one. This was designed by the Housman Society & Bromsgrove District Council. The statue, by local sculptor Kenneth Potts, was also renovated. It was originally unveiled on the 22nd March 1985. The inscription on this side reads:- "A.E. Housman 1859-1936 Classical scholar and poet Author of a Shropshire Lad". Extracts from some of his poems appear on the other sides. Alfred Edward Housman was born in Bromsgrove but many of his best known poems relate to places in Shropshire. His poems particularly appealed to composers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who set the words to music. Quite what Housman would have made of the ugly CCTC camera lurking in the background of this photograph can only be guessed at. For better or worse they seem a permanent part of 21st century town centres.
